Dental implants are one of the most popular choices for replacing missing teeth because they look and function so much like your natural ones. They do involve a surgical procedure though, which can make some patients nervous. If you’re feeling anxious, taking proactive steps to be sure you’re prepared might put your mind at ease. Keep reading to learn about 3 things you can do to help ensure that your dental implants will be a success!

Item #1: Ask Questions

It’s important to be well-informed prior to your surgery. During your preliminary consultation with your dentist, feel free to bring up whatever questions or concerns you may have. They’ll be happy to provide answers and walk you through the different steps in the process. They want you to feel fully informed about what’s involved and confident in their ability to care for you.

Item #2: Plan In Advance

There are things you’ll want to ensure are taken care of in advance so that after your procedure you can focus on recovery. For example, you might be unable to drive afterward depending on the sedation used.  That means you’ll need someone to help take you home once it’s done.

Then you’ll need a few days to rest and heal. Don’t be afraid to ask for the help you need! You might find your friends and family are more than willing to help with cooking, cleaning, and other household chores.

Also, remember to clear your schedule for the coming days so you can have the break you need for your dental implant to heal. This could mean taking appropriate medical leave at your job, school, or business.

Item #3: Follow Preoperative Instructions

Your dentist will have shared instructions for steps you’ll need to take leading up to your procedure. It’s important to follow these directions to avoid any potential risks or complications that might arise. Your orders might include:

  • Rinsing your mouth with antibacterial mouthwash to keep unhealthy germs at bay.
  • Taking prescribed medications, like antibiotics or oral sedatives.
  • Fasting or meal instructions. If you’re having IV sedation, you’ll likely be instructed not to eat or drink anything after midnight the evening before your appointment.

Also, you’ll also want to feel as relaxed as possible so plan to dress in loose, comfortable clothing.

Hopefully, now that you know how you can prepare, you’ll feel less anxious about your upcoming surgery. If there’s still some aspect that you don’t understand or have questions about, you’re always welcome to reach out to your dentist’s office. They can answer your questions and provide information to set your mind at ease. Before you know it, you’ll be relaxing at home with a new replacement tooth that will last for years to come!
