6 Tips for Easing New Aligner Discomfort

Starting your Invisalign or clear aligner journey is an exciting step toward a straighter, healthier smile. But like most orthodontic treatments, the first few days with a new set of aligners can come with some discomfort. Whether it’s tightness, pressure, or sore spots, the adjustment period is completely normal and temporary. There are several ways to make the process more comfortable. Here are some practical tips to ease new aligner discomfort and help you stay on track with your treatment.

Wear Them as Directed (Even When It Hurts)

It may seem counterintuitive, but the best way to get past the discomfort is to keep wearing your aligners. Removing them too often can delay your adjustment and actually make the pain last longer. Aim to wear your aligners for the full 20 to 22 hours per day as recommended by your dentist or orthodontist. Consistency is key to minimizing pain and speeding up the adjustment process.

Use Orthodontic Wax for Sore Spots

New aligners can sometimes cause irritation along your gums, cheeks, or tongue, especially if there’s a rough edge. Applying orthodontic wax to those areas can create a smooth barrier and reduce friction. Just take a small piece, roll it into a ball, and press it against the trouble spot on your aligner. If the edges remain sharp, ask your provider if they can trim or smooth them down.

Try a Cold Compress or Ice Water

If you’re feeling soreness or swelling in your jaw or gums, a cold compress on the outside of your mouth can help reduce inflammation. Alternatively, slowly sipping on ice water can gently numb your mouth and provide temporary relief; just don’t chew the ice, as that could damage your aligners or teeth.

Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relief (If Needed)

For more significant discomfort, a mild over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help. Always follow the dosage instructions and consult your doctor if you have any medical conditions or take other medications. Most people only need pain relief during the first day or two of a new tray.

Use “Chewies” to Help Seats Aligners Properly

Aligner “chewies” are small, soft cylinders made of silicone or foam that you bite down on after inserting your trays. They help eliminate air gaps between your teeth and the aligner, ensuring a better fit and reducing pressure points. Use them for 5 to 10 minutes after putting in new trays to help your aligners seat more comfortably and speed up the adjustment.

Stick to Soft Foods During the First Few Days

Chewing tough or crunchy foods can increase soreness when your teeth are shifting. Opt for softer foods like smoothies, soups, yogurt, or pasta when you switch to a new tray. This gives your teeth a break and helps reduce tenderness during meals.

Mild discomfort is a normal part of the aligner process. It means your teeth are moving! But with the right strategies, you can minimize the pain and stay on track. A more comfortable smile is just around the corner!
