If you wear dentures or partials and have had a stroke, take cold medicines often, are a public speaker or just want a bit more security throughout the day, using a denture adhesive could be a good option. But how do you decide which style is the best? With so many options available, it can be difficult to select the right one for you. If you find yourself a bit overwhelmed by this decision, don’t worry. Below, you will learn about 3 types of adhesives and the benefits of each one.

Denture Cream

Denture creams seal about 74% of food particles and can offer a strong, long-lasting hold. Many come in tubes with an ooze-control tip that allows you to easily control the amount of adhesive you apply to your prosthetics. They also help prevent gum irritation and come in fresh flavors and zinc-free formulas. Simply apply the cream in short strips along the inner-facing surface of your denture then press and hold it into place. If you wear full dentures, biting down firmly once both prosthetics are in place can help secure the hold.

Denture Powder

If the texture of creams makes you uncomfortable, a great alternative is to use adhesive powder. This option also offers a strong, all day hold (up to 12 hours) and is easy to remove. This option is often zinc-free that can simply be sprinkled in short strips along the surface of your prosthetics. Once applied, insert your dentures and press and hold them firmly into place.

Denture Strips

Adhesive strips are convenient and easy to apply and remove while still offering a long-lasting hold. The strips are pre-cut and mess free, preventing over-application of an adhesive. An additional benefit to adhesive strips is that there is no risk of dealing with unpleasant textures or uneven application.

What You Should Know

Denture adhesive zinc poisoning can occur if you have too much zinc in your body. If you do use a sealant with zinc ingredients, make sure that you are only applying it once a day and use what is necessary. Most tubes should last for 4 weeks or longer.

People choose to use denture sealant for many different reasons. But if you are considering it due to ill-fitting dentures, it is a good idea to schedule a visit with your dentist in Moses Lake. A quick adjustment could have them fitting so well that you no longer need a denture adhesive!
