New Year's Eve

Now that 2022 is nearly here, you may already be starting to incorporate some positive changes into your life so you can work on becoming the best version of yourself. Whether you’re taking the time to get more exercise, drinking more water throughout the day, or trying to get 8 hours of sleep every night, you’re taking measures to benefit yourself. If you don’t already have a New Year’s resolution in mind, or you have room for a couple more, we have a few ideas. Here are some steps that you can take to work towards a healthier smile in the coming year.

Attend Regular Dental Checkups

Even if you are great at brushing and flossing regularly, routine cleanings and checkups are still an essential part of achieving optimal oral health. However, about a third of Americans don’t see their dentist as often as they would like to. Now is a great time to call your dentist to get back on track. Don’t forget to schedule your next appointment before leaving the dental practice.

Floss Every Day

Brushing is an excellent way to remove plaque and food particles from the surface of your teeth, but there are some areas where the bristles can’t quite effectively reach. That’s why flossing is a necessary step. This is needed so you can remove bacterial-filled plaque from between the teeth and beneath the gumline. If you haven’t already gotten into this habit, now is a great time to start. Place your container of floss next to your toothpaste don’t forget.

Quit Smoking

Smoking doubles your risk for gum disease and is linked to many other serious medical conditions, including oral cancer. This habit can be very difficult for some people to give up, so finding a healthier replacement activity for when the cravings kick in can help. Talk to your friends, family, and doctor about the best ways you can quit for good.

Limit Your Sugar Intake

Everyone likes to enjoy something sweet now and again, but too much can put your smile at risk for tooth decay. Reduce the number of sugary sweets that you buy and try to find something else that will satisfy the craving. For example, choose sparkling water instead of a soda or have some sugar-free gum in the place of candy.

Choose Tooth-Friendly Foods

The good news is that not all foods are harmful for your teeth. Some of them can actually be very beneficial. Try adding some tooth-healthy foods into your diet, like dairy products. They are beneficial for your teeth because they are high in calcium. Try having some milk or yogurt for breakfast. Cheese, apples, pears, carrots, celery, and almonds are also excellent options for your smile.

Set up your smile for success this year! By using the tips listed above, you will be one step closer to achieving excellent dental health in 2022.
